Liz

I am a PhD student in Media  & Cultural Studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. My research interests include disability and the internet, blogging, and feminist media studies. Someday, I’d like to step into games studies, as well.

The title of this blog is a bit of a pun on my research interests, which center on identity and computer and internet technologies. While early rhetoric of the internet and online social communities celebrated a space without bodies (no one knows you’re a dog!), it is clear that gender, race, class, sexuality and nationality all come into play in our online interactions and presentation. The internet is not a disembodied space. My focus is on disability as a form of embodiment and identity that can impede access to technology, and as an underexplored form of identity online. Dis/Embody pulls together these interests in disability, online identity and embodied experience.

My other academic interests include feminist television and media studies, blogging, and social networking sites.

I like my partner, mystery novels, and my cat, among other things. Find me, and things I like, elsewhere:
